This off-season was a difficult one for Cub Nation, as we lost citizen #1 – Mr. Cub, Ernie Banks. A great loss of a great man, but he led a great life that we were lucky to share.
One of the best ballplayers of all time, Ernie never had the chance to take the field in a playoff game or see the Cubs win a World Series and leaves this mortal coil just as his team has started to round into the respectability he deserved. The rebuilt Chicago Cubs should be vastly improved this season and contenders for years to come, but Mr. Cub will have to watch the renaissance from above with teammate Ron Santo.
We lost Santo 4 years ago, and we presume he’s been waiting for his fellow Hall-of-Famer to come and round out the heavenly lineup in a Cubby blue Field of Dreams. This cartoon from our friends at Kicking Chalk
depicts the reunion between fan favorites as both players enter the gates of heaven (a/k/a Eternity Field”) ready to take the field. Of course Ernie wants to play two!
