Chicago’s baseball team is named after cuddly young bears, but the driving force behind the club’s 2015 success is an overgrown grizzly named Jake Arrieta.
Might be time for a new logo.
The Chicago Cubs’ second-half surge rode the arm of its dominating Cy Young candidate, Jake Arrieta – a hurler more myth than man. A hulking, bearded, intimidating presence, Jake posted legendary numbers and helped convert an organization known for loveable losing into a World Series contender.
Jake didn’t do it himself – Jon Lester is a brother ace and the young bats of Rizzo/Bryant/Schwarber supplied the runs...but if any player was the face of the franchise, it was Arrieta’s scraggly snarling mug.
So it is that we’ve decided to re-imagine a team logo in Jake’s image: his flat-brimmed cap, intense gaze and facial forest all transform a plump-faced young bear into a 22-game-winning force of nature, a logo that will frighten opposing batters and mark you as a true fan of Arrieta and the Cubs!
