When Yasiel Puig sparked the Los Angeles Dodgers and set the major leagues ablaze, all scouting eyes turned to Cuba in an effort to sign-and-smuggle the next Great Thing. Attention quickly focused on slugging first baseman Jose Abreu, and $70M later, he was signed by Chicago’s South-Siders.
Jose defected in August of 2013 and was already locked-in the Sox lineup by Opening Day 2014; his work ethic, sweet swing and explosive power quickly justified his signing while his great numbers and big smile made him a fan favorite in no time. Adjusting quickly to MLB pitching, Abreu is making a strong case for Rookie of the Year and MVP consideration.
At 6’3” and 255 pounds, Jose’s imposing stature earned him the nickname El Oso (The Bear) in Cuba, but when his Chicago teammates encountered his warm personality and friendly demeanor they quickly tweaked the nickname to conform to a beloved American version: Yogi. (Truth be told, he even looks a bit like the picnic-thieving character).
