Before amusement taxes and multi-tier rooftop bleachers…before Toyota signs and jumbotrons…before political zoning battles over entertainment megaplexes, the friendly confines was a neighborhood ballpark and Wrigleyville was a relatively sedate area. The fans on roofs actually lived in the buildings and there was one sign on Sheffield that everyone knew – TORCO.
Even if you didn’t know what TORCO was (and most didn’t – a local holding company comprised primarily of auto dealerships and petroleum derivative products), you knew the simple sign that watched over the ballpark during the 1970s (when the team and the ‘hood were dilapidated), the 1980s (when the magic returned) and the 1990s (when the commercialization exploded).
The sign was eventually sold to Miller Brewing, which updates the space with slogans reflecting current opponents/events…it’s pretty fun, but it will always be “da TORCO sign” to us. Show your knowledge of classic Wrigleyville with this new tee featuring an intentionally old look, based upon the iconic logo of years gone by. HIT THE TORCO SIGN!
